Kathy had always loved cats, but when her coworker mentioned a blind Himalayan kitten in desperate need of a home, something in her heart stirred that she couldn’t ignore. 🐾 “He asked [my coworker] if she could take her in for free and care for her,” Kathy recalls. Without hesitation, she knew she wanted to be that person for the little feline.
Curious, Kathy asked for more details and learned that the kitten had lost her vision due to a severe eye infection that went untreated. “One eye had swollen dramatically while the other shrank,” Kathy explained. “It must have been incredibly painful for her.” Knowing this, Kathy felt even more determined to rescue the kitten and give her the life she deserved.
Without seeing the kitten in person, Kathy and her husband agreed to adopt her. Their only condition was that she be healthy and free from viruses, as they already had two cats at home and wanted to keep everyone safe. “We wanted to give her the care and attention she needed,” Kathy said, “and we knew our home could provide that.”
Before bringing the kitten home, however, she needed surgery to remove her badly damaged eyes. On December 18, 2021, the day after the operation, Kathy and her husband finally brought her home to Plainfield, Illinois. They renamed her Josephine Quiche, or Josie for short. “We like giving our girl cats old-fashioned first names and breakfast food middle names,” Kathy laughed. 🍳
Despite being blind, Josie adapted remarkably quickly. She was curious, playful, and eager to explore her new surroundings. Kathy’s husband took it upon himself to teach her how to safely navigate furniture. “He taught her the word ‘down’ and guided her on how far she could jump,” Kathy said. Josie quickly learned to trust his guidance, and within days, she was confidently moving around the house like she’d been there all her life.
Josie soon revealed that blindness didn’t limit her in the slightest. She loved pouncing on her housemates, playing in tunnels, chasing crinkly balls, and batting toy mice across the room. Kathy often overheard visitors express surprise that a blind kitten could be so lively and full of joy. “Some people think special needs cats can’t have a quality life, but that’s just not true,” she said. 😺
Living with Josie taught Kathy and her husband an important lesson: consistency matters. They kept her toys and furniture in familiar places, allowing her to create a mental map of the home. Even so, Josie displayed impressive adaptability, rushing upstairs to eat or curling up in her favorite spots without hesitation. “Animals are incredible at adjusting,” Kathy said.

Josie paused mid-play, ears perked, and bolted to the hallway. Kathy and her husband followed her, only to discover that one of their neighbors’ dogs had accidentally wandered into their yard. The dog was nervous and trembling, unable to see well in the dim light.
Instinctively, Josie approached the dog, meowing gently and circling him as if guiding him. Her calm presence seemed to soothe the frightened animal, and soon the dog followed her quietly back to the gate. Kathy’s husband opened it, and the dog ran safely back home. “I couldn’t believe it,” Kathy said. “Our little blind kitten had guided a stranger home like a tiny, furry lighthouse.” 🌟
From that day on, Josie’s role in the household seemed to expand. She wasn’t just a playful companion or an emotional support animal—she was a guardian in her own right. Kathy and her husband often joked that she had a superhero side no one could have anticipated.
