A few years ago, a dog wandered into the shelter where I worked, and from the moment she arrived, it was clear she was unlike any dog we had ever seen. Her appearance left the staff speechless. She had a wild, almost surreal look, and her behavior was intense—snapping at anyone who came near. 😳 One of the shelter officers quickly muzzled her and carried her into the veterinary clinic for a thorough examination. While the vets were assessing her, I happened to glance into her eyes. It sounds strange, almost magical, but the moment our eyes met, she seemed to sigh, relax, and let her walls come down.
Later that day, I invited her into my office for further evaluation. To my astonishment, she climbed right onto my lap, a huge, seemingly terrifying dog curling up as if she had known me forever. Her head rested gently on my shoulder, and I felt an immediate connection that went beyond words. 🥰 It was impossible to ignore the bond forming in that very moment. Without hesitation, I decided to adopt her, and from that day forward, we became inseparable.
Her name is Toad, and she became the heart and soul of what would eventually become Mutt Misfits, a rescue organization dedicated to helping animals with special needs, deformities, or injuries who might otherwise face euthanasia. In May 2017, my coworkers and I launched Mutt Misfits after witnessing firsthand how “misfit” dogs were treated. Over the years, we’ve been able to save roughly 200 dogs, each with their own story of survival, resilience, and love. 🐾
Toad is not your typical dog. She has two mouths—one where her ear should be. On her left side, she has a second mouth equipped with teeth and saliva glands. It doesn’t have a jaw, so she can’t chew with it, but it drools and connects to her main mouth. After she eats, the extra mouth produces its own saliva, which our vet cleans and maintains periodically. While some might find this grotesque, the misfit dogs we care for seem to adore her even more for it. Her uniqueness makes her extraordinary. 💛
Veterinarians have offered several theories about Toad’s unusual anatomy. The prevailing theory is that she absorbed a twin in utero, which would explain her extra mouth, the odd formation of her skull, and other anomalies. Despite her differences, Toad is healthy and happy, living a life full of joy and affection. She may not have the lifespan of a typical dog, but the quality of her life is unmatched.
Over time, we took detailed X-rays of Toad’s skull to better understand her anatomy. Her head has an extra orbital bone around one eye socket, likely from the absorbed twin. Two sets of hyoid bones are present, her vertebrae are misaligned, and she even has a partially formed extra trachea. Every image told a story of resilience—a testament to how a creature can survive against the odds. 🩻
Despite her challenges, Toad’s spirit never wavered. She became an ambassador for misfit dogs everywhere, a living symbol of courage and love. Visitors to our shelter would marvel at her, and she would respond with an almost human-like intelligence in her eyes, a quiet confidence that made everyone fall in love instantly.
One afternoon, I noticed Toad staring intently at the window, her extra mouth twitching in a way I hadn’t seen before. She pawed at the glass, her entire body vibrating with excitement. Curious, I opened the door to the backyard, and she sprinted to a corner I had never paid much attention to. There, buried beneath leaves and dirt, was a small, fragile puppy, shivering and alone. Toad nudged it gently with her nose, as if signaling me to take action. 🐶💖
We rushed the puppy inside, warmed him up, and provided food and care. Over the next few weeks, an incredible bond formed between Toad and the little dog. She seemed to take on the role of protector and mentor, patiently guiding him through the complexities of the world, teaching him how to eat, play, and trust humans again. Watching her nurture him was astonishing, especially considering her past trauma and unique condition. She had found purpose beyond her own survival—she was now saving another life. 🌟
Months went by, and the little dog, now named Sprout, thrived under Toad’s care. Shelter visitors often remarked that they had never seen such an unusual yet profoundly loving pair. And then, one evening, something truly extraordinary happened. Toad, who had always been a bit wary of strangers, walked calmly up to a delivery person at the shelter’s door, her two mouths moving almost in unison, producing a sound that sounded eerily like a bark and a whisper at the same time.
The delivery person, bewildered, leaned closer, and to everyone’s astonishment, Toad gently nudged a small envelope toward him with her paw. Inside was a note, written in perfect handwriting, that read: “This dog saved me, now I am helping her save the world.”
😲 It turned out that years earlier, the note’s sender had rescued Toad as a puppy before she wandered off to the shelter. Somehow, the bond Toad had formed with humans and animals had transcended logic, leaving a trail of inspiration behind her.
Today, Toad and Sprout are inseparable. They remind us every day that differences can be beautiful, that love has no boundaries, and that even the most extraordinary challenges can lead to miracles. And as for Toad’s extra mouth?
It may be unusual, but it is also a reminder that life is full of surprises—and sometimes, the most unexpected features can make a creature a legend. 🐾✨
