“HELP! PLEASE, SAVE MY MOMMY!” screamed a desperate five-year-old girl from behind a closed second-floor window. I was walking through the apartment courtyard when I heard her heartbreaking cries. Looking up, I saw the little girl crying and banging her hands against the glass. “What happened? Where’s your mommy?” I shouted. “She’s inside, but she won’t wake up,” she answered through sobs. I immediately called 911 and rushed toward the building entrance. The girl cried out again, “Please, don’t leave my mommy alone!” At that moment, I had no idea what I would find inside the apartment. And when the door finally opened, a small object revealed something none of the neighbors had ever suspected.

That morning, as usual, I was walking through the courtyard of our apartment building before heading to work. It was a sunny day. A few children were playing in the nearby playground, while neighbors hurried about their daily routines.
Everything seemed perfectly normal until I heard a little girl’s terrified scream.
“HELP! PLEASE! SOMEBODY SAVE MY MOMMY!”
I stopped and looked around.
The voice was coming from above.
Behind a second-floor window stood a little girl, about five years old. Her brown hair fell to her shoulders, and she was wiping her tears with the sleeves of her pink sweater.
She pressed one hand against the glass and desperately waved with the other.
“Sweetheart, what’s happened?” I shouted.
She tried to answer, but her sobbing made it difficult.
“My mommy… my mommy won’t wake up.”
My heart tightened.
“Where is she?”
“In the living room. I’ve called her so many times, but she won’t talk to me.”
Without wasting another second, I called 911.
I gave the operator the address and explained that a small child was inside the apartment and her mother was unresponsive.
The operator told me that help was already on the way and asked me to stay on the line.
I looked up again.
“Sweetheart, what’s your name?”
“Emily.”
“Emily, my name is Anna. I’m right here, and I’m not going anywhere. Help is already coming.”
The little girl rested her head against the glass.
“But Mommy promised we would have breakfast together today…”
Those words brought tears to my eyes.
“We’re going to do everything we can to help your mommy, sweetheart.”
I hurried toward the building entrance. The main door was open.

I went up to the second floor and stopped outside the apartment whose window the girl had been calling from.
I knocked several times.
“Emily! It’s Anna. Can you hear me?”
I heard tiny footsteps inside.
“I’m here.”
“Can you open the door?”
A few seconds later, I heard the lock turning.
The door slowly opened.
The little girl stood in front of me, her eyes full of tears and her lips trembling.
She took my hand.
“Please, come. Mommy doesn’t want to wake up.”
I stepped inside.
A woman of about thirty was lying on the living room sofa.
Her mobile phone was lying on the floor beside her, and a half-full glass of water stood on the table.
I approached her and tried to speak to her.
“Ma’am, can you hear me?”
There was no answer.
I immediately told the emergency operator what I was seeing. Following the operator’s instructions, I checked the woman’s breathing.
Thankfully, she was breathing.
“Is my mommy going to die?” Emily suddenly asked.
I turned around.
She was standing in the doorway, tightly clutching a small stuffed rabbit.
“The doctors are already coming, sweetheart. The most important thing now is that help arrives in time.”
The girl approached her mother.
“Mommy, I brought Anna. Please, open your eyes.”
Just then, the sound of an ambulance siren came from the distance.
A few minutes later, the paramedics entered the apartment.
They immediately began examining the woman.
I took Emily into the hallway so we wouldn’t get in their way.
The little girl held my hand tightly and kept asking whether her mommy would hug her again.
Suddenly, she remembered something.
“Anna, I have something to show you.”
She ran into her little bedroom and returned with a folded piece of paper.
“Mommy told me yesterday that if she ever felt very sick and couldn’t speak, I should show this paper to a grown-up.”
I unfolded the paper.

It read:
“If something happens to me, please take care of Emily first. She’s very afraid of being alone. Her grandmother’s phone number is written below.”
On the other side of the paper was important information about the woman’s medical conditions and the medications she was taking.
I immediately handed it to the paramedics.
One of them read the note and said:
“This is very important. Thank you.”
I looked at Emily in amazement.
Despite her overwhelming fear, this five-year-old child had remembered her mother’s instructions and kept the essential information safe.
At that moment, one of the paramedics approached us.
“Her condition is serious, but we arrived in time. We’re taking her to the hospital.”
Emily began to cry.
“I want to go with Mommy!”
The paramedic knelt in front of her.
“You’ve been very brave today. Now we’re going to help your mommy.”
I called the number written on the paper.
An elderly woman answered.
When I explained what had happened, her voice began to tremble.
“I’m her mother. Please, don’t leave Emily alone. I’m coming right away.”
A few hours later, we were at the hospital.
Emily sat on her grandmother’s lap, but she never took her eyes off the corridor door.
Finally, a doctor approached us.
“Her condition has stabilized. She’s regained consciousness.”
The grandmother burst into tears of relief.
“Can we see her?”
The doctor allowed us a short visit.
When we entered the room, Emily was the first to spot her mother.
“MOMMY!”
She ran toward the bed, and her mother opened her arms with a faint smile.
“My little girl…”
Emily wrapped her arms around her and began sobbing.
“I kept calling you, but you wouldn’t answer me.”
Her mother gently stroked her hair.
“I know, sweetheart. I’m sorry I frightened you so much.”
“I called for help through the window. Anna came.”
The woman looked at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You saved my life.”
I shook my head.
“Your daughter was the one who called for help. I simply heard her.”
At that moment, the doctor explained that the woman had suffered a sudden, serious medical emergency and that calling for an ambulance in time had been crucial.
Emily hugged her mother again.
“Mommy, do you know what scared me the most?”
“What was it, my love?”
“I was afraid you’d never say good morning to me again.”
The woman couldn’t hold back her tears.
She kissed her daughter’s forehead.

“Then I’ll say it to you right now. Good morning, my little miracle.”
For the first time that day, Emily smiled.
A few days later, her mother returned home.
From that day on, whenever I walked through the apartment courtyard, I would hear a familiar voice calling from the second-floor window.
“ANNA! HELLO!”
And one morning, Emily came down into the courtyard holding a little drawing.
The picture showed three people: her mother, herself, and a woman standing below the apartment building.
At the top of the drawing were the words:
“Thank you for hearing me.”
I hugged her tightly.
That day, I understood something I would never forget.
Sometimes, you don’t have to be a hero to save a life. Sometimes, all it takes is stopping for a moment, listening to someone crying out for help, and refusing to walk past another person’s suffering with indifference.
